MELANAU


The melanau tribe is the largest ethnic group after dayak. The Melanau tribe is categorized as the second largest tribe in Sarawak. most people melanau embraced Islam and some still embrace Christianity. but they still have the same beliefs inherited from ancestors. Melanau ethnic groups gather in coastal areas such as the northern valley of Rajang River, Igan, Mukah, Dalat, Oya, and Bintulu. The earliest community in Sarawak lives in Mukah. People in the community are mostly Christians. The Melanau people have also lived in a longhouse (built high). According to their beliefs, high houses can avoid the disaster as a result of catastrophe. However, the Melanau community today has changed their way of living by living in a village house that follows the Malay pattern. Most are built by the river and close to the beach.

The kaul celebration are celebrated by the Melanau people happily in March or April each year according to the Melanau calendec. This festival is help to entertain the sea-watchers. It's purpose is to obtain satisfactory and safe arrests while at sea and avoid various epidemics and diseases. This celebration symbolizes the end of the rainy season and the arrival or beginning of the fishing season. In this day, the serahang will be provided for entertaining. Serahang is made of bamboo leaves and leaves of nipah by entering taro, chicken eggs, yellow glutinous rice, kirai or leaf cigarettes, and betel in it. However, this festival comes with enthusiasm and excitement. but in the present time, the provision of surrender during the festive season has been forgotten because it is contrary to the religion of Islam which is a majority of the Muslim population.

and shawls.


baju baldu -The Melanau woman dressed in black velvet with a sarongs of Sarawak woven sarong Sarawak, with a large pending waist, dyed and jewelry. baju baban -The Melanau woman dressed the Baban Shirt from Melanau's bridal costume. A short black brimmed dress was matched with a songket cloth. In the chest wear 2 pieces of red scarf and self-dressing ponytail and corset
